What is the Zankel Leadership Trip?
The Zankel Leadership Trip is for Sophomores and Juniors in any NY State Hillel . This 14-day Taglit - birthright israel trip, funded by The Zankel Foundation, is an initiative of the UJA-Federation New York and in partnership with Hillel.
Who is Eligible?
- Eligible for the Taglit-Birthright Israel program
- Sophomores and Juniors in the NY state Hillel System
- Currently in some form of leadership position such as college newspaper, Greek system, the college government or Jewish leadership.
When is this happening?
This is a 14 day program tentatively set for Dec 23-Jan 7; it will be run every season.
What are the goals?
- To increase Fellows’ knowledge, understanding and connection to Israel while developing their leadership skills.
- To expose Fellows to historical and contemporary young leaders who made remarkable differences in the world.
- To better understand the characteristics of the State of Israel: democracy in Israel, the political system, justice system in Israel and more.
- To discuss social issues in Israel: Co-existence, Religious freedom, Inter religious affairs, Human rights, and others.
- To gain insight into the delicate political issues Israel faces such as: Israel-Palestinian conflict, Israel security fence, and Israel's changing borders.
- To explore the complexities of these issues as (potential) leaders in the Jewish community.
- Program opening in the Judean Wilderness & Negev Desert where Fellows will get to know each other and themselves better – creating personal and group visions.
- Meetings with community leaders of Negev communities.
- Meeting at Kibbutz Shiler to work with one of the largest food programs in Israel: Table to Table. Fellows will “glean” fields for food to be given to food kitchens.
- Israeli cultural events and activities:
- Meeting at “Desert Vision” Cooperative Art Colony
- Bedouin Hafla dinner
- Performance at the Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre
- Tour of Jaffa Artist Colony and performance by percussionist Chen Zimbalista
- Personalized track days at Ben Gurion University and the Herzlia Interdisciplinary Center (IDC)
- Community Service at the Ramon Center for Ecological Studies, working with Bedouin students;
- After the trip is over Fellows will meet for a reunion and presentation to the Zankel family about the community service project.

- There will be a special application process to choose 2 students from each campus to participate in the program but you must first register for Taglit-Birthright Israel . The application will be available very soon.
